Upcoming changes to the NSIA notification service: Transition to gov.UK one login
The Investment Security Unit within the Cabinet Office has announced a significant update to the National Security and Investment Act 2021 (NSIA) notification service, which will affect how users access and manage notifications.
From 2 September 2025, users will be required to access the NSIA notification service using the GOV.UK One Login, replacing the current multi-factor authentication system. GOV.UK One Login is a single sign-in system that enables users to access various government services securely and efficiently.
In preparation for the upcoming changes, users should be aware that the NSIA notification service will be unavailable on 1 September 2025 while the system is being updated. Any notifications due around this date should be planned accordingly to avoid disruption.
From 2 September 2025 onwards, all users will need to create and use a GOV.UK One Login account to access the NSIA notification service. This involves setting up an account via the GOV.UK website and selecting an authentication method (either through an authentication app or SMS). Importantly, users will not be required to verify their identity beyond this authentication step.
Once signed in, users will be able to access the NSIA dashboard, where they can access their messages, notifications and profile.
For those who have previously used the NSIA notification service, you will need to transfer your existing and previous notifications to your new GOV.UK One Login account. The transfer of existing and previous notifications will be available from 2 September 2025.
One of the most welcome changes accompanying this update is the removal of domain restrictions for sharing notifications. Historically, users could only share notifications with others who had the same email domain (an issue that particularly affected collaboration between law firms and their clients). Going forward, notifications can be shared with external users regardless of their email domain, provided that the recipient also has a GOV.UK One Login account. This enhancement responds directly to user feedback in the latest NSIA digital survey and is expected to significantly improve the collaborative functionality of the NSIA notification service.
Further guidance will be made available in the form of a user guide and FAQ, which is scheduled for release during the week commencing 18 August 2025.
These updates represent a meaningful step towards improving the usability and security of the NSIA notification service. Practitioners should ensure that they are prepared for the transition and understand the new procedures for accessing and sharing notifications.
