Wedlake Bell makes major strategic move with the hire of charities specialist Jonathan Brinsden and team to bolster Charities & Not for Profit practice
Wedlake Bell has announced the arrival of highly regarded lawyer Jonathan Brinsden, who has joined the firm from Broadfield Law. Joining him at the firm, also from Broadfield, are Legal Director Ben Brice, Associate Preena Patel and Solicitor Sophie Peach.
Jonathan arrives as a Partner after more than 20 years at Broadfield Law, where he served as Head of Charities and built a market leading practice. He is individually ranked as a Band 1 lawyer in Chambers UK for Charities, recognised for his regulatory expertise, pragmatic style and ability to advise some of the sector’s most high profile organisations.
A landmark hire for Wedlake Bell
Jonathan brings a wealth of experience to the firm. His clients include charities, NGOs and social enterprises and his skill set includes advising on Charity Commission schemes and handling complex regulatory matters, leading governance reforms and overseeing constitutional restructuring, as well as navigating the intricacies of NHS charity regulation. He advises on impact investment and ensuring fundraising compliance, and has substantial experience supporting international charity operations, including the management of dual-qualified structures.
The expanded practice marks a key moment for Wedlake Bell, introducing new capabilities for clients. The team will now offer comprehensive, end-to-end support across a range of areas including governance and regulatory risk, constitutional frameworks, fundraising and operational compliance, and cross-border structuring. Additionally, clients will continue to benefit from expert guidance in private wealth, philanthropy and legacy giving, ensuring that organisations are equipped to address the multifaceted challenges of the charities and not-for-profit sector.
Martin Arnold, Managing Partner at Wedlake Bell, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Jonathan and team to the firm. Their arrival allows us to build on our current Charities & Not‑for‑Profit offering. Expanding our practices across the firm to ensure that our clients can come to us for the full breadth of their needs sits at the heart of our growth strategy.”
Jonathan Brinsden added: “Wedlake Bell offers a genuinely integrated platform across private wealth, corporate, employment and real estate which aligns naturally with the increasingly sophisticated needs of charities, philanthropic clients and the impact economy more generally. As demand grows for private/public partnerships, complex governance advice and social investment solutions, the firm is particularly well placed to support clients deploying capital for impact, whether personally or through their businesses. I am delighted to be joining a firm whose breadth and technical depth reflect the evolving ambitions of the sector.”
