The article considers the importance of choosing the right legal adviser, understanding the financial implications of divorce and exploring alternatives to court proceedings wherever possible. It also examines the value of taking a pragmatic approach to financial settlements and focusing on long-term outcomes rather than individual assets.

Alex discusses the different routes available to separating couples, including mediation, arbitration and Resolution Together, where one lawyer advises both parties. He explains how these approaches can often help couples avoid court, reduce conflict and reach resolutions more efficiently, while recognising that the most suitable option will depend on each couple’s circumstances.

Commenting on the division of assets, Alex also highlights the importance of stepping back from assets that may be viewed as a “win”, such as the family home or a pension, and instead considering the best overall way to separate finances.
