Head of Family Alex Davies has been featured in eprivateclient, Solicitors Journal and Today’s Family Lawyer commenting on the Office for National Statistics’ latest divorce figures for England and Wales.
The figures show that divorce numbers have remained broadly stable in recent years, while the average length of marriages ending in divorce has increased.
Commenting on the findings, Alex highlighted that wider changes in family life are of greater significance than fluctuations in annual divorce rates. He noted that increasing numbers of couples are choosing to cohabit rather than marry, while legal protections for cohabiting couples have not kept pace with modern family relationships.
Alex also discussed the government’s current proposals to reform cohabitation rights, which could provide greater financial protection for cohabiting couples and their children, while better reflecting the realities of modern family life.
