As The Grand Tour is launched, how can you stop your TV format from being pinched?

Jeremy Clarkson’s new motoring show The Grand Tour will launch on Amazon Prime tomorrow. However, as the launch date has drawn closer, there has been much comment in the press about the degree to which Clarkson and his team have had to be careful not to make the programme too similar to Top Gear. This leads to the question of what can be protected when it comes to TV shows.

There is no such thing as ‘format rights’ in English law, but copyright law can go some way towards protecting shows.
